Climate Smart Cities
Objective:Cities are critical players in achieving a sustainable future for all: By 2050, 70% of the world's population will live in urban centres, which already account for 70% of global CO2 emissions in the energy sector. Your city can play a vital role in financing solutions and turning vision into practical action plans. As a city with sustainability objectives, you can benefit from the innovation potential of businesses and the financial sector to identify cost-effective solutions for some of the most pressing urban challenges.
Measures to reduce emissions at city-level can create the necessary tipping point to reach climate change mitigation goals and sustainable economic growth. Depending on cities' needs, we offer:
- Monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) services and/or direct advice on concrete projects
- Match-making opportunities for investors and cities, and consulting for cities on the most innovative tools to access finance

Monitoring services and advisory on urban projects
Together with the Gold Standard Foundation, we have developed a new module for Sustainable Urban Development: This module allows cities to improve finance for the low-carbon development programmes based on certified climate and development results. Our expertise also extends to advisory services for cities in places such as Brazil, Colombia, Germany, India, Indonesia, Mexico and Thailand on technical solutions and planning tools for low-carbon development: We are, for instance, piloting the monitoring of CO2 from transport with mobile phone data with the City of Nuremberg. Creating strategy and putting in place robust urban systems to design inclusive, safe, sustainable, and disaster-resilient cities is a collaborative effort. We work with development agencies, municipal decision-makers, and the local civil society to ensure enduring solutions and to measure progress on sustainable and climate-smart urban development.
Attracting and securing finance for cities through smart match-making
Through our leading role in EU's global Low Carbon City Lab, we work at the epicentre of establishing better match-making opportunities for investors and cities. We consult cities on the most innovative tools to access finance. This includes:
- Raising green, low-cost capital through green bonds: We have, together with pioneering actors such as the Climate Bonds Initiative and ICLEI, supported Mexico City in the issuance of the first green municipal bond in Latin America.
- Advice on financial structuring, sourcing of finance and impact assessment for low-carbon city projects in emerging economies, tailored to the relevant sector (buildings, waste and transport), technology and geography. Depending on cities' needs, we offer either general capacity building and/or direct advice on real projects. We support, among others, Indian cities in accessing climate finance under the CapaCITIES project that is financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation
